From Tahrir square and the Egyptian Museum, to the Islamic and Christian neighbourhoods, there’s a lot to see in Cairo

It was very hot when I visited at the end of June. And in the heat, everything requires more energy than usual. But the excitement about finally making it to Cairo was more than enough motivation to venture out.
The key neighbourhoods to see are Islamic Cairo (Medieval Cairo or Fatimid Cairo as it is also called) and the Coptic part of the city. Of course, I have a whole video on the Giza pyramids and Sphinx.

Pyramids of Giza

The Giza necropolis is one of the world’s most famous historical sites, so I was braced for crowds of tourists. Instead, I found it surprisingly empty and even peaceful.

While it was nice to have the pyramids “to myself” local vendors were visibly disgruntled. They mentioned a shortage of tourists since the Arab spring, as many visitors are afraid of coming to Cairo.
